Arnsberg castle ruins

Around 1100 a castle was built on the present Schlossberg (castle hill), which today serves as a reminder of the totally redesigned Renaissance castle designed according to plans by the architect Schlaun under Prince Clemens-August from 1730 to 1734, which was destroyed in 1762 during the Seven Years' War.

Möhnesee is located at the north-western edge of the Arnsberg Forest nature park. The Möhne Reservoir was constructed from 1908 to 1913 and inaugurated on 12 July 1913 by the Ruhrtalsperrenverein (Ruhr reservoirs association). The Möhne Reservoir was badly damaged during World War 2 by a British air raid in the night from 16 to 17 May 1943. Over 1,600 people died. The reconstruction started immediately after the severe damage and was completed on 3 October 1943 with the laying of the road surface at the dam crest.
